Pancreatic Cancer β Diagnosis & Staging in Okeechobee, FL
Pancreatic cancer is a serious disease that often causes few symptoms until it is advanced. That is why prompt evaluation matters when warning signs appear, or when imaging shows a pancreatic mass or cyst. At Gastro in Florida, Dr. Vikram Tarugu focuses on diagnosis and staging: confirming whether cancer is present, obtaining tissue for diagnosis, and clarifying how far it has spread, so that oncology and surgery teams can plan the right treatment. He diagnoses and stages pancreatic cancer and coordinates care with oncology and surgery; he does not treat the cancer itself.

Warning signs to watch for
Pancreatic cancer symptoms can be vague, and they overlap with many less serious conditions. Warning signs can include:
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or pale stools, especially without pain
- Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite
- Pain in the upper belly or back that does not ease
- New diabetes, or diabetes that suddenly becomes hard to control
- Nausea, bloating, or a feeling of fullness after small meals
These symptoms do not always mean cancer, but they deserve prompt evaluation, particularly when they are new, persistent, or occur together.
Risk factors
Risk is higher with increasing age, smoking, obesity, long-standing diabetes, chronic pancreatitis, and a family history of pancreatic cancer or certain inherited syndromes. Many people with pancreatic cancer have no clear risk factor, so symptoms and imaging findings matter more than risk alone. If you have a strong family history, ask Dr. Tarugu whether surveillance or earlier evaluation is appropriate for you.
How we diagnose and stage pancreatic cancer at Gastro in Florida
Diagnosis often begins with blood tests and cross-sectional imaging, such as CT or MRI, arranged through your referring clinician or hospital. When a mass, cyst, or bile duct blockage needs closer evaluation, Dr. Tarugu may perform endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). During EUS, an ultrasound probe on the tip of an endoscope gives a detailed view of the pancreas from inside the stomach and duodenum. If a suspicious area is found, EUS-guided fine-needle biopsy can obtain a small tissue sample for laboratory diagnosis. Staging uses the biopsy result together with imaging to show the size of the tumor, whether nearby lymph nodes or blood vessels are involved, and whether the disease has spread. This staging information is essential for oncology and surgery teams to decide on the next steps.
What happens after diagnosis
After diagnosis and staging, Dr. Tarugu coordinates care with oncology and surgery, and shares your results promptly so that treatment planning is not delayed. Cancer treatment itself, which may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, or a combination, is provided by oncology and surgery specialists. In the meantime, our office can help manage related problems, such as bile duct blockage, pain, nausea, or digestive symptoms, and can arrange endoscopic treatment for a blocked bile duct when needed. We will also explain your results in plain language, answer questions, and support you and your family through the referral process.
When to see a specialist
See a gastroenterologist promptly for jaundice, unexplained weight loss, persistent upper belly or back pain, or a pancreatic mass or cyst found on imaging. Seek urgent care for severe pain, fever with jaundice, vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Early evaluation can clarify the diagnosis and speed referral to the right specialists. Most plans do not require a referral β we will check yours.
