Liver Ultrasound in Okeechobee, FL

A liver ultrasound is a painless imaging test that uses sound waves β€” not radiation β€” to create pictures of the liver and nearby abdominal organs. A handheld device called a transducer sends sound waves into the body and records the echoes, which a computer turns into live images. Because there is no radiation and no sedation, the test is safe, comfortable, and easy to repeat when follow-up is needed. Ultrasound is often the first imaging test ordered for liver and gallbladder symptoms because it is widely available, costs less than CT or MRI, and gives immediate information. At Gastro in Florida, Dr. Vikram Tarugu uses in-office liver and abdominal ultrasound to evaluate digestive symptoms and liver conditions without sending you to a separate imaging center.

Liver ultrasound can evaluate fatty liver disease, in which excess fat builds up in the liver, as well as the gallbladder and gallstones, which are a common cause of pain in the upper right abdomen, especially after meals. It also shows the bile ducts, liver size and texture, and signs of liver scarring or fluid around the liver. It can show whether a bile duct is dilated or blocked, which helps explain jaundice or abnormal liver tests, and it gives a first look at the pancreas and surrounding structures. The test is often part of the workup for abdominal pain, abnormal liver blood tests, or an enlarged liver found on examination. When the ultrasound finds gallstones or a gallbladder problem, Dr. Tarugu can explain what it means and what treatment options make sense. During the test, you lie back on an examination table and a clear gel is applied to your abdomen. The gel helps the sound waves travel and lets the transducer glide smoothly over the skin. Dr. Tarugu or a trained team member moves the handheld probe over the liver and gallbladder area while watching the images on a screen. You may be asked to hold your breath briefly or change position so the liver and gallbladder can be seen from different angles. The test is painless β€” you may feel only light pressure from the probe β€” and it usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes. There is no sedation, so you can drive yourself home and return to normal activities right away.

Preparation is usually simple. Fasting beforehand is commonly requested for abdominal imaging, because food and gas in the stomach and bowel can make the images harder to read. Our office will confirm your instructions when you schedule, including how long to avoid eating or drinking before the test. Ultrasound is sometimes combined with blood tests or a FibroScan to give a fuller picture of liver health. Results are reviewed promptly β€” Dr. Tarugu will go over what the ultrasound showed, whether any follow-up testing is needed, and what the findings mean for your care. If the ultrasound shows fatty liver, gallstones, or another concern, further evaluation or treatment can be arranged without delay.
