Liver Disease β€” Diagnosis & Treatment in Okeechobee, FL

Anatomical illustration of the human liver

The liver is one of the body’s hardest-working organs. It processes nutrients, filters the blood, makes proteins that help blood clot, and clears toxins from the body. Because liver disease often develops quietly, many people feel well even as damage is building. At Gastro in Florida, Dr. Vikram Tarugu provides liver evaluation in Okeechobee, with on-site FibroScan and liver ultrasound to measure liver health without a biopsy in most cases. This page is an overview; follow the links below for more detail on each condition.

Common liver conditions we evaluate

Liver disease is an umbrella term for many conditions that inflame, injure, or scar the liver. Three of the most common are:

  • Fatty liver disease β€” excess fat builds up in liver cells, often linked to obesity, diabetes, and high cholesterol. It is now one of the most common liver problems in the United States.
  • Hepatitis β€” inflammation of the liver, most often caused by viruses, alcohol, or certain medicines. Some forms are short-lived, while others become chronic and need long-term monitoring.
  • Cirrhosis β€” advanced, often permanent scarring that develops after years of liver injury. It can affect how well the liver works and raise the risk of liver cancer.

Other causes include alcohol-related liver disease, autoimmune hepatitis, and bile duct problems. Whatever the cause, early detection gives the best chance to slow or stop further damage.

Symptoms of liver disease

Early liver disease often causes no symptoms. When symptoms do appear, they can include fatigue, weakness, loss of appetite, nausea, pain or tenderness in the upper right belly, and swelling in the legs or abdomen. More advanced disease can cause yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, easy bruising, itching, and confusion. Because these symptoms overlap with many other conditions, blood tests and imaging are important for a clear diagnosis.

How we diagnose liver disease at Gastro in Florida

Diagnosis starts with your history, medicines, alcohol use, and risk factors, along with blood tests that check liver enzymes, bilirubin, and blood clotting. Liver ultrasound is a painless first imaging test that can show fat, enlargement, or changes in liver texture. At our Okeechobee office, we also offer on-site FibroScan, a quick, noninvasive test that measures liver stiffness and fat. FibroScan helps Dr. Tarugu judge how much scarring is present and track changes over time, usually without needing a liver biopsy. When a biopsy or further imaging is needed, we will explain why and arrange it.

Treatment options

Treatment depends on the cause and stage of liver disease, and it is often most effective when started early. For fatty liver disease, weight loss, control of diabetes and cholesterol, and reduced alcohol use are central, along with regular monitoring. Viral hepatitis may be treated with antiviral medicines. Alcohol-related disease requires stopping alcohol, with support and follow-up. In cirrhosis, care focuses on preventing complications, watching for liver cancer with regular ultrasound, managing fluid buildup and bleeding risk, and coordinating with other specialists when needed. Dr. Tarugu will review your results, set a monitoring plan, and adjust treatment as your liver health changes.

When to see a specialist

See a gastroenterologist if blood tests show abnormal liver results, imaging shows a liver problem, or you have persistent fatigue, upper belly pain, or jaundice. Seek urgent care for confusion, vomiting blood, black stools, severe swelling, or rapid worsening of jaundice. If you have diabetes, obesity, or heavy alcohol use, ask about liver screening even if you feel well. Most plans do not require a referral β€” we will check yours.
