Hepatitis B & C β Diagnosis & Treatment in Okeechobee, FL
Hepatitis means inflammation of the liver. The most common causes are viruses, and hepatitis B and hepatitis C are the types most likely to linger and damage the liver over many years if they are not found and treated. Both infections are often silent: many people carry the virus for years without feeling ill, and learn they have it only through a blood test. The good news is that both can be detected with simple blood tests, and modern treatment can control hepatitis B and, in many patients, clear hepatitis C. Because untreated chronic hepatitis can lead to scarring (cirrhosis) and liver cancer, testing and follow-up matter even when you feel well.
Symptoms
Many people with hepatitis B or C have no symptoms at all, especially in the early or chronic stages. When symptoms do occur, they may include:
- Fatigue, nausea, or loss of appetite
- A dull ache or discomfort in the upper right abdomen
- Low-grade fever, muscle aches, or joint pain
- Dark urine or pale-colored stools
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
Symptoms can be mild and easy to blame on other causes, which is why blood testing β not symptoms alone β is how these infections are usually found.
Causes and risk factors
Hepatitis B spreads through contact with infected blood and body fluids, including unprotected sex, sharing needles or other drug equipment, and from mother to baby during childbirth. Hepatitis C spreads mainly through blood, most often through shared needles, and less commonly through transfusions given before routine blood screening began, unsterile tattoo or piercing equipment, or needlestick injuries in health care. Health authorities recommend hepatitis C testing at least once for all adults, and hepatitis B testing for people with risk factors such as a household or sexual contact with an infected person, injection drug use, or birth in a region where hepatitis B is common. Anyone with these risk factors should ask about testing, even without symptoms.
How we diagnose it at Gastro in Florida
Diagnosis starts with blood tests: tests for hepatitis B antigens and antibodies, a hepatitis C antibody test confirmed by a viral RNA test, and liver function tests that show how much inflammation is present. We also check whether you are immune to hepatitis A and B. At Gastro in Florida, we offer FibroScan on site β a painless, non-invasive scan that measures liver stiffness and fat, showing how much scarring the virus has caused without the need for a biopsy in most cases. Ultrasound imaging may also be used, and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) can help evaluate complications or unclear findings where relevant. You can also browse our full list of conditions we treat. Results guide whether treatment, vaccination, or regular monitoring is the right next step.
Treatment options
Treatment depends on the virus and how far liver damage has progressed. For hepatitis B, antiviral medicines can suppress the virus and slow liver damage, usually with ongoing monitoring. For hepatitis C, modern antiviral courses prescribed by a specialist can clear the virus in many patients. Your doctor will also talk about protecting your liver: avoiding alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, and vaccination against hepatitis A β and against hepatitis B if you are not already immune. If scarring is advanced, we monitor for complications and for liver cancer, and coordinate referral for advanced liver care, including transplant evaluation, when that becomes appropriate. Because treatment plans depend on your test results and liver health, they are always tailored to the individual.
When to see a specialist
See a gastroenterologist if you test positive for hepatitis B or C, have any of the risk factors above, have abnormal liver blood tests, or have been told you may have been exposed. Seek urgent care right away if you vomit blood, pass black stools, develop sudden severe abdominal pain, notice marked swelling or jaundice, or experience confusion β these can signal advanced liver disease or bleeding and need prompt attention. Early diagnosis and follow-up give you the best chance of protecting your liver.
