GERD & Acid Reflux β€” Diagnosis & Treatment in Okeechobee, FL

Endoscopy to evaluate celiac disease at Gastro in Florida, Okeechobee

Gastroesophageal reflux disease, known as GERD, happens when stomach acid flows back up into the esophagus on a regular basis. Occasional heartburn after a large or spicy meal is common and usually harmless, but when reflux happens twice a week or more, or it starts to damage the esophagus, it is considered GERD. Left untreated, chronic reflux can cause inflammation, ulcers, narrowing of the esophagus, and changes to the lining known as Barrett’s esophagus. At Gastro in Florida in Okeechobee, Dr. Vikram Tarugu diagnoses GERD and treats both the symptoms and the underlying reflux.

Symptoms

The most common signs of GERD include:

  • Heartburn β€” a burning pain in the chest, often after eating or when lying down
  • Regurgitation of sour liquid or food into the throat or mouth
  • Trouble swallowing or a feeling that food is stuck
  • Chronic cough, hoarseness, or a sore throat that will not clear
  • Chest discomfort that can feel similar to heart pain
  • Nausea, burping, or a bitter taste in the mouth

Because chest pain can also signal a heart problem, new or severe chest pain should always be evaluated urgently to rule out a cardiac cause first.

Causes and risk factors

GERD occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter β€” the muscle valve between the esophagus and stomach β€” weakens or relaxes when it should not, letting acid escape upward. Risk factors include obesity, pregnancy, hiatal hernia, smoking, and eating large meals or lying down soon after eating. Fatty or spicy foods, citrus, tomato, chocolate, mint, caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated drinks commonly trigger symptoms, as can certain medicines. Over time, repeated acid exposure inflames the esophageal lining, and in some people it leads to Barrett’s esophagus, a precancerous change that needs monitoring.

How we diagnose it at Gastro in Florida

Diagnosis often starts with your symptom history and response to basic measures, but testing is important when symptoms are frequent, severe, or accompanied by warning signs. An upper endoscopy is the key test: a thin, flexible camera examines the esophagus and stomach directly, checks for inflammation, ulcers, narrowing, or Barrett’s changes, and takes small tissue samples when needed. Endoscopy is performed in our office endoscopy suite in Okeechobee with sedation, and most patients receive results the same day. Your doctor may also discuss acid monitoring or other testing if the diagnosis is unclear.

Treatment options

Treatment usually begins with lifestyle changes: eating smaller meals, avoiding known trigger foods, not eating for a few hours before bed, raising the head of the bed, losing excess weight, and stopping smoking. When lifestyle measures are not enough, your doctor may discuss acid-reducing treatment plans to lower stomach acid and allow the esophagus to heal. For Barrett’s esophagus or narrowing, surveillance endoscopy and, when appropriate, endoscopic treatment may be recommended. Surgery is reserved for selected cases that do not respond to other treatment. This page is general education only; your treatment plan should be based on your own evaluation.

When to see a specialist

See a gastroenterologist if heartburn occurs more than twice a week, keeps returning, or does not improve with basic measures, or if you have trouble swallowing, persistent vomiting, or unexplained weight loss. Seek urgent care right away for vomiting blood, black or bloody stools, severe chest pain, difficulty breathing, or food that will not pass β€” these can signal bleeding, severe inflammation, or a blockage that needs emergency attention.
